Political Science

Oxford, Miss- Since the opening of its doors in 1848,Political Science has been an integral part of the The University of Mississippi. The current Department of Political Science was founded in 1943, and the doctoral program was established in 1967. It has only been in recent times that Political Science has gained the validation it seeks as a legitimate degree. One might wonder what can be accomplished with this degree, you would be surprised by the wide range of options availed.” The options one has when graduating with a political degree are endless, I am working for a brokerage firm this summer” said Bryan Nelson. These range from teaching, foreign consultant or even can lead to a law degree. In addition to the degree programs, the department also offers a minor concentration in Political Science and participates in the interdisciplinary major in International Studies offered by the Croft Institute.
According to Greg Day Political Science professor the increase in Political Science majors to law school has been astonishing

“ I remember when I started working toward my Ph.D three years ago I would have never thought that there would be such an influx of political science majors going to law school.”

This is further supported by Political Science graduate Mike Young. He will be working for
Morgan, Lewis & Bockius located in Washington D.C after August. This is the fifth largest law firm in the United States. He is planning on attending law school after working for a year.

“ I could have gone to a good law school but just felt that this was an opportunity I could not pass up. Experience goes a lot farther in the working world than just a good education.”

When asked if he felt prepared for law school and all he was about to undertake he remarked.

“Everyone can take as much or as little away from their education as they want. It’s what you make of it most of the time, the Political Science department and Dr Allen and all the professors there push each and every student to strive for excellence, it was this mind sent that has me fully confident in my ability to be a good student and good lawyer.”

The department's facility includes nationally-known scholars in the fields of American politics, comparative politics, international relations, and political methodology; current
research by faculty and graduate students has been published in the major journals of the discipline.
